While on a trip to Africa, Princess Elizabeth learned her beloved father, King George VI, had died in his sleep back home. It was a devastating shock.

Elizabeth — a young wife, a new mother, and a devoted daughter — was shockingly, suddenly the Queen of England. She was 25 years old.

But there was this: She had already lived many years of interrupted plans. She had grown strong in the ability to pivot and persevere with grace.

This year marks 70 years since that momentous pivot and the stories of her fortitude and resiliency are endless.

As I’ve had the chance to research her early life for a project the last few years, the moments of quiet service, compassion, and determination have moved and inspired me. I count it a treat to catch the tale end of this story which has played out for almost 100 years.

Windsor Castle, steeped in history dating back to 1070 AD.

In the last 100 years it served as a safe refuge for a scared young Princess Elizabeth during WWII, where she helped tear up manicured gardens to plant food when times got tough, and it continues to provide a place of refuge for the persevering woman, now 80 years later.

The stories of history fascinate me and this place is full of them.

PSALM 23

As a little girl, Elizabeth’s mother taught her the 23rd Psalm in the Old Scottish way, the version she herself had learned as a child. It’s held special significance ever since and she arranged is to be sung at her wedding.

On her 21st birthday, the princess broadcasted a speech which expressed her life-long dedication to the work before her. Little did she know then it would begin in just four short years.

I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service….
